About TISS Mumbai
Through the course of years, Tata Institute of Social Sciences has earned a widespread recognition from different state governments, ministries, non-government sector, and international agencies like the United Nations. TISS is applauded by these groups and organizations because of the positive work ethos, social commitments, and responsiveness to social needs, strong links to education, field action, research and dissemination as well as posturing creativity in the Institute. It has significantly contributed a lot to the Indian community in terms of action strategies and human resource development, sustainable urban and rural development related to communal harmony, industrial relations, human rights, education, and health. Nevertheless, a massive amount of its researches focuses more on the marginalized and disadvantaged classes of society which includes the women, dhalits, children and tribal groups in India.
TISS works based on ten guiding principles namely respect, equality, accountability and transparency, participative decision-making, critical thinking, innovative academic activities, synergy, cooperation, self-introspection and social interactions. With these fundamental principles, TISS believes that it can help create a society composed of selfless and people-centered citizens.
The dedication and hardships of TISS is slowly reaping fruits. It has been a principal recipient of the Global Funds for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria where it aids in providing supportive supervision and training of over 12,000 HIV/AIDS counselors from all over the country. With these funds, TISS wishes to increase the awareness of everyone with regards to womens issues, rural and urban development problems, human right and individual rights of indigenous people and minority groups. It is also aided by the UNICEF in its endeavor to develop a State Resource Network on Micro-Planning which will institutionalize and support peoples planning in selected regions of India. These are just a few of the recent supporters, activities and researches of TISS. There are dozens more not listed here but India will forever be grateful for all the hard work and effort that are exerted by everyone affiliated with it.
